'Passionate People' is a monthly newsletter from the
desk of Paula Smith, Speaker, Author, Trainer and Coach.
Yes I know, harsh words but how many times have you
wanted to say that to someone?
The other day I spent most of my day fixing peoples
mistakes, chasing up businesses who didn’t get back to
me and speaking to people on the phone who really just
didn’t care.
What a waste of a day. I sound a little tender, you say.
Absolutely!
What ever happened to good old-fashioned work ethic?
What ever happened to those people who knew their job
inside out and were obviously passionate about their
position and wanted to do their very best?
What
about a simple statement like “I will get back to you
later today to confirm” and three days later you are
still waiting.
And the best one of all time, the terrible disease that
is spreading through Australian business at a rapid
rate. “ITS NOT MY JOB SYNDROME” Yes Mrs Smith it was my
job to quote you and I did put it together, but I
couldn’t possibly help the Junior with the mail that
day” Its not my job. She was under the pump and I knew
she wouldn’t get it done on time but what was I suppose
to do? Help her?
It drives me crazier than ever though when I am paying
for a service at a premium price and not only do they
not provide an ounce over the expected service but they
seem shocked when I comment that there were 7 mistakes
and they have left a mess of papers and lunch wrappings
behind…..right next to the bin.
So this week I would like everyone who has experienced
great service this year; served by someone with an
awesome attitude to acknowledge them. Send them a thank
you card. Ring up the radio station; give them a
Christmas gift just so they know that we don’t want them
to go home, we want their attitude to rub off on
everyone around them.
My acknowledgement is to a café in Midland. Rose’s Café.
(The Avenue, Midland) I cannot remember when I got not
only fabulous customer service but exceptional service
every single time I go in there. How wonderful it is
to go into a small family owned lunch bar/café and have
your coffee waiting for you on the counter and have all
the staff get to know your name and the owners clearly
demonstrate nothing is too much trouble. This is the
service they give everyone that walks in their door
- Awesome
Attitude.
So lets now do an ATTITUDE check and see if you should
be going home.
If you make a promise, regardless how
small
KEEP YOUR PROMISE
Return ALL phone calls and emails within 24 hours
or get someone else to acknowledge them
COMMON COURTESY
Have
pride in your work – Go the extra mile and smile
ATTITUDE
Your
professional reputation is at stake. Don’t just do it
though because of your work reputation. Do it because you
want to BE A
PERSON WHO CARES
Don’t count your pay cheque, count the people you have
helped in a week.
Merry Christmas everyone, I hope you have the chance to
spend it with people who make you smile.

Presentation skills are a must have skill in today’s
competitive business world.
Tip Number
9.
Learn to be an Educator.
It is not always the most knowledgeable person or the
most entertaining presenter that is asked to present; it
is the one that knows how to inspire people into action.
Actions that improve performance.
I have shared many tips this year, from being
yourself to the rules of influence.
All of them essential ingredients to becoming a stand
out presenter. Many presenters also train, present in
boardrooms, speak at meetings and present to clients. A
great presenter will learn to also master the skill of
being an educator.
We need to know how to make learning stick. How to
educate and inform to ensure our participants remember
as much of the information as possible.
The FARMOP model is a model for the
principles of adult learning. Know how adults prefer to
learn and incorporate the principles into your
presentations and training rooms.
F is for Feedback (Adults like to
receive feedback)
A is for Active Learning (Adults
like to have hands on learning, not be power pointed to
death)
R is for Respect and Reinforcement
(Your audience demands respect and appreciates learning
reinforcement)
M is for Meaningful and Multiple
Sense Learning (As an adult all learning needs to be
relevant and can be applied soon after, Engage as many
senses as you can in a learning environment for a deeper
level of learning)
O is for Open to Negotiation (Adults
like to take ownership of their learning, so don’t tell
or control, do discuss, negotiate and ask for permission)
P is for Problem Solving (Don’t give
an adult learner all the answers, provide opportunities to
learn by investigation and exploration)
Put yourself in the shoes of an audience member or
workshop participant. Do your training methods excite
you? Do they meet the principles of adult learning? A
great book to read to develop your educator skills is by
Marcia L Tate “Sit and Get Won’t Grow Dendrites” A great
read available on Amazon

Have you ever considered speaking as a marketing
strategy? Would you like to profit from your passion?
Do
you know every year; hundreds of opportunities present
themselves for you to tell people about your business
and what you have to offer.
A presentation is an opportunity to tell people about
yourself, your business, your products and services.
Many business groups and not for profit organisations
meet on a weekly basis and are always looking for guest
speakers.
Now don’t go in there with the big sell. That would be a
disaster. Go in with some valuable information about
“your stuff “, information that they could still apply
even if they don’t buy. Become an expert on your stuff.
Become an awesome presenter, a presenter who they tell
others about. The whole time you are building business
relationships and marketing your business. The benefits
will come.
Serious business people are in business for the long
haul. It takes time to build a brand; it takes time to
build relationships. Add speaking into your long-term
marketing strategy. A piece of junk mail in the
letterbox does not build a relationship.
Go out and meet people, go out and look for
opportunities to market your business by speaking about
it.
Learn how to speak and present. Master the skill, it is
a very effective marketing strategy. top of page
