'Passionate People' is a monthly newsletter from the
desk of Paula Smith, Speaker, Author, Trainer and Coach.
Do you remember the
song? If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands?
And every 4 year old in the room clapped their hands. It
is very easy for a 4 year old to be happy. In fact some
research suggests a 4 year old laughs on average 300
times a day and an adult laughs only 18 times a day.
How sad is that!
So I am going to ask you again.
If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands…really
loud.
If you had to think about it or decided you just
weren’t happy, what were your thoughts? Did you feel
disappointment perhaps? Is it so
hard to find happiness? Or do you feel numb and can’t
remember the last time you felt really really happy.
What is happiness anyway?
Is happiness something you say you will be when you get
that new job, or new house or I’ll be happy when I get
more money.
Happiness is a state of mind. If you look around at all
the things you have and all the things in life that you
are grateful for instead of all the things you don’t
have or the things you constantly complain about you
will find you have much to be happy about.
According to Daniel Gilbert in his book Stumbling on
Happiness, economists and psychologists have spent decades
studying the relationship between wealth and happiness
and have concluded that wealth increased human happiness
only when it lifts people out of abject poverty and into
middle class but does little to increase happiness
thereafter. People who live in poor nations can be just
as happy or more so than people who live in wealthier
nations.
So we can’t always blame our pay packets or the things
we don’t have as the cause for unhappiness. Look
further.
Why do you do the job you do? Why do you have the
friends you have? What do you spend your weekends doing?
What are the things that truly make you happy? Not short
moments of instant gratification (That’s what I feel
when I go shoe shopping – Only to have it wear off after
the 2nd time I have worn them) Real pit in the stomach,
overwhelming happiness, contentment, elation even.
When you discover what these moments are, you can set
your goals to have more of them. Now who would like a
big bowl of happiness? You know where to find it, so
what is stopping you?
Just to get you back in the happiness mode, find someone
right now to have a laugh with, a big belly laugh, the
type that makes your eyes water. The kind of laugh a 4
year old does. Then stop and see how
it feels.
Then of course CLAP YOUR HANDS
If you want to know what true happiness is and reaching
for all the things you want in life read the story of
The Greek Fisherman. It makes you think why you are
working as hard as you are.

Some thoughts from my clients who have completed
training and assessment.
Paula is a
fantastic facilitator. She is interested in everyone and
is very passionate about training. I would highly
recommend her as one of the best if not the best!
Jean Fisher - Aged Care Trainer
It is clear Paula has a love and
passion for her field. Paula’s delivery was nothing
short of superb. Everyone who attended the course would
agree. I took away a renewed enthusiasm after finishing
the course and Paula was available afterwards to assist
us any time. I look forward to a continued business
relationship with her.
Paul Gillingham – Principle Inspire Realty
Paula’s presentation skills were
of the highest quality and this fact was clearly
demonstrated when she transformed our classroom into a
place where the learning experience was both enjoyable
and successful. Because of Paula’s dynamic delivery we
chose to ask Paula to return to deliver her Leadership
programme which also hit the mark with outstanding
success across all levels of the organisation.
Leonard Vose - Human Resources Bradken
Wow Paula, well done. Truly,
you were one of the best presenters I have ever
encountered. Love,
Rasha A. Othman - Accountant
In March 2010, I completed my
Training and Assessment with Paula of Studio West
Training Solutions. Paula’s knowledge of the Training
and Assessment industry is excellent. Testament to the
skills and knowledge gained while undertaking this
qualification is, I have just successfully become a
Registered Training Organisation. A large feat for
an individual. The end result being excellent
preparation for the real life training and assessment
workplace.

Presentation skills are a must have skill in today’s
competitive business world.
Tip Number 7.
Be an influential presenter.
If you discover the purpose of your presentation is
to influence your audience to take action, how do you
start to plan an “Influential Presentation”?
You could start by visiting Robert Cheldini’s 6 Rules
of Influence.
Author of the amazing best seller “Influence”
Cheldini’s rules of influence can be used in planning,
designing and delivering your next presentation.
Rule No1 - Law of Reciprocity
(Do a favour for them, they are more likely to return
it)
Rule No 2 – Law of Commitment and Consistency
(Prove commitment and consistency to the topic you are
presenting)
Rule No 3. Law of Authority (Are
you an authority? – don’t forget your credibility
statement)
Rule No 4. Law of Social Proof
(Are all their colleagues and friends using it with
great results?)
Rule No 5. Law of Scarcity (There
is only 10 left, you must act now –Tell the truth here)
Rule No 6. Law of Liking (It
actually does matter if you are likeable)
Lets look at this newsletter – just as an example as
it really is a presentation in a sense. I am trying to
influence you into using my services one day in the
future.
Reciprocity – I am giving you free tips and some
interesting thoughts.
Law of Commitment and Consistency – You get the newsletter every
month and you know I have spent over 20 years training
and studying this stuff
Law of Authority – Its amazing what the Title
“Author” does for credibility
Law of Social Proof – I have included some
testimonials
Law of Scarcity – Last course for this year – limited
numbers
Law of Liking – Well come on guys, I really am
nice…..
Remember the purpose of your presentation. If it is
to influence, study and learn how we influence and
persuade people and plan your presentation accordingly.
