'Passionate People' is a monthly newsletter from the
desk of Paula Smith, Speaker, Author, Trainer and Coach.
Hi Again
May already, what a busy year and regardless of increasing
interest rates business confidence seems to be moving in
the right direction.
Thank you to all those wonderful people who came to support
me at the Speaking in the Shower book launch
and congratulations to the speakers and Lois Keay-Smith
who took out the Speak Off Trophy.
I have just returned from a fantastic week at the Gold
Coast for the National Speakers Convention.
Apart from building valuable relationships I got to spend
time with not only Australia’s but also the worlds top speakers.
Do you invest in professional development? How often do
you attend a conference, a networking event or a training
course to improve your knowledge or skills. Invest in yourself,
no-one can ever take it away from you.

The WA Team at National Speakers Convention at
the Gold Coast
One of those amazing people at the National Speakers
Convention was Dr Edward de Bono.
Dr de Bono is The Guru, The King, The World Leader in lateral
and creative thinking.
After a few hours with Dr de Bono it was amazing how
my creative thinking started to ignite again.

Dr Edward de Bono and I. How lucky am I.
Three questions for you
- When was the last time you asked someone with little
or no experience to help you solve a problem? – you
may be surprised of how an outsider sees things.
- When did you last leave the office for the day with
your team to brainstorm? A different environment can
lead to different thinking.
- What strategies do you use to think creatively?
If we continue to think the same we will only ever get
the same results. I challenge you to spend time learning
the skill of thinking creatively.
This year I took my 15-year-old daughter Sarah to the
National Speakers Convention. Along with other youth of
various ages from across the country, Sarah participated
in a unique National Speakers youth convention. It was an
“Awesome” experience and their creative thinking was inspiring.
They were going to take on the world…
Do we encourage our kids to think differently or do we
penalise them for it? Do we encourage our kids to be entrepreneurs
or do we teach them to work hard and get a good job with
no other options?
In our wonderful Country our kids have endless opportunities
to think differently, be different and to be tomorrow’s
leaders.

Poor presentation skills could be the cause of thousands
of dollars worth of lost business.
Presentation skills is a must have skill in today’s competitive
business world.
Tip Number 2: BE YOURSELF You do not
have to study, copy or work hard at it. The most influential
and inspiring speakers are experts in being themselves.
What makes you stand out? Why are you unique? Is it because
of your flaming red hair, your unusual voice, your silly
playfulness? When you see a great trainer or presenter don’t
ever compare yourself to them, you will always fall short.
What do you have that makes you you? I want you
to go and look in the mirror and say I am the world’s expert
in being me. No one can do it better.

For almost 20 years, if you don’t know me well, I built
a franchise group of grooming, deportment and personal development
schools.
Over this period I worked with many business people who
were struggling with their professional image. Many organisations
also needed help to align their staff’s personal branding
to their organisational branding.
For small business owners it can be another story, your
business could be your personal branding.
Personal Branding is about your image. It is about how
you are judged by your key constituents. (Whether you like
it or not)
It isn’t about a designer suit and a fancy tie.
Personal branding is about :
Your grooming/image
Your competence
Your communication
Your business ethics
I see too many people concerned about their clothes and
forget about their professional competence.
Think about some very successful people you know, do
they manage their branding?
What comes to mind, when you think of: Richard Branson,
Oprah Winfrey, or some of our Politicians that have been
in the news lately?
Do you manage your branding? A reputation can take years
to build; a brand is never formed overnight. A brand has
to be developed and maintained. A brand has to be consistent.
